Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and it’s a busy city for tourists. I’ve been there for quite sometimes, and it was good experience to explore the city, but the Taxi fare and other expenses are comparatively higher than other South Asian countries such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Taxi fare alone was $30 from Airport to Colombo 3 Galle Road, the airport is 35KM away from Colombo city, therefore, you have to either take a Taxi or Bus. The Taxi option is very expensive as it would cost you around $20-$30. However, I myself did not find the bus service in the Airport, but I’ve heard and read on forums that you can travel by bus from airport to the city.
Bus From Colombo Airport to City
As I mentioned, I did not find the bus terminal at Bandarnaike International Airport in Colombo, but you can ask someone in the airport about the bus station, that’s opposite the terminal 1 and 2. It will only cost you $2 USD to reach the city, and when you are in the city then Tuk Tuk should always be your convince.
Taxi from Colombo Airport to City
In my recent visit to Colombo – Sri Lanka, I traveled in a Taxi, I straight came out from the Airport, and found a lot of Taxis there, I asked one driver about the fare to Colombo 3 Galle Road area where my hotel was located, he said $30, I did not agree, and I asked for negotiation up to $20, he did not accept the offer, and I found another driver who agreed on $26 and I sat in the Taxi, it was mid-night and raining too, so the journey was not enjoyable at night, but was OK. The drivers can speak English a little bit, so you’ll have to repeat your words a few times in order to make the driver fully understand what you are saying. You can find Taxi from Airport to City ranging from $20 to $30 but not less than that.
The Tuk Tuk in Colombo City
Tuk Tuk is a convince which is the cheapest in Colombo – and you can find it everywhere. This is a type of Rickshaw (We call it Rickshaw in Pakistan/India), This is the only thing I found cheaper in Sri Lanka, other things were so expensive :). You can travel in a Tuk Tuk all the day for a few bucks, isn’t that cool?
I once was passing through the street in Colombo 4 area (Galle Road), and was looking for a Tuk Tuk, one stopped his Tuk Tuk near me and asked me where I wanted to go, I replied to a restaurant in Colombo 10, he said, he would take me to all the city for 2 hours only for $1 dollar, and I was amazed having heard his offer. I agreed and we went to all popular places within 2 hours. This was even not possible in Karachi, because in Karachi you’ll have to at least spend $5 in order to travel in Rickshaw for 2 hours. The Tuk Tuk riders in Colombo speak very fancy English, so you’ll enjoy that as well, some are very funny and tell you jokes.
By saying this all I mean, the Tuk Tuk is one of the convenient and simple convince which you can have at the cheapest price. So when you are in the Colombo city, never travel in a Taxi, always sit in the Tuk Tuk and go where you want for a few Sri Lankan Rupees. Give them some tip as well if you can afford.
So it was my story about Taxi and Tuk Tuk fare in Colombo city, please let me know about your stay and experience in Colombo – Sri Lanka, so we can learn from each other. Happy Traveling!
