If you are in Penang and want to go to Langkawi using ferry then it’s very easy to do. I came to visit Penang from Ipoh province in Malaysia and then I wanted to go to Langkawi, there are two options. one is to go to Kedah and take ferry from there which will be cheaper. but then again, that’s time consuming and also a bus journey is involved from Penang to Kedah.
Ferry from Penang to Langkawi
the ferry terminal is located near Little India in Penang, it’s in George town which is the capital of Penang state in Malaysia. if you are in George town then you can simply take a taxi to ferry terminal. it shouldn’t cost more than 10 MYR. you can go by walk as well, if you have Google Map and you are near the ferry terminal.
The first thing is to buy the ticket which is 70 MYR per person from Penang to Langkawi, you can buy it from the ticket office which is the first thing you’ll see when you arrive outside the terminal.
After ticket, you’ll go through screening in the terminal and then you’ll walk to the main terminal where you can wait for your ferry time. it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes or less to reach the beautiful Langkawi in Malaysia.
I did this trip myself, and I enjoyed it a lot. the weather was fantastic. the ferry is not an open ferry, so you have to sit inside, and simply look at the sea from a window. you can also sleep there if you want 🙂
as I mentioned earlier, you can take the ferry from Kedah as well, I also thought about that many times. but then I decided to go from Penang in order to save time.
One important thing to remember that there are only two timings available for ferry from Penang to Langkawi. one is the in morning at 8:00 AM and second time is 2:00PM in the afternoon. you can also book the ticket in advance if you want. but generally, you should be fine with ticket when you arrive at the terminal just an hour before the ferry leaves for Langkawi.
I have also made a video about this journey, which you can watch below. if you are not an Urdu/Hindi speaker then you’ll not understand the commentary in the video, as it’s not in English, but still you can see how the journey goes. if you have any other questions then do let me know in the comments. Happy Traveling!
