Recently, I visited the United States of America which was a wonderful adventure. I’ve covered half of my US tour in my previous article – 15 days visit to USA. And I’m going to cover the remaining part in this post. In my previous post, I covered the USA visit costs of first 6 days, and travel journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles and in between. In this article, I’ll cover the rest of the USA visit costs and travel experience from Los Angeles to Washington, from Washington to Virginia and from Virginia to New York. You must read part one of this story in order to understand part 2 and the rest.
Los Angeles to Washington
When I was in Karachi, I booked my flight from Los Angeles to Washington via American Airlines. I checked a few low-cost airlines such as Southwest, Virgins and American, but American Airlines (AA) seemed reasonable. However, they don’t provide in-flight meals, and they charge extra for both “Luggage” and “preferred Seating” in the economy area. I’ll recommend to not select a preferred seat while booking your flight with AA, as seat will be provided to you when you get your boarding pass at the airport.
So the flight cost me $256 from Los Angeles (LA) to Washington (DC), it was a 4:30 hours flight from LA to DC. The flight was very smooth, take-off was awesome as well as landing, and while landing at Dulles airport in DC, I saw the beautiful Washington (District of Colombia) which is green and clean, and you love it while passing through it.
Exploring Washington DC
Washington is a clean and green capital of the United States. You’ll find historical buildings and signs of the Union of the United States of America in Washington DC. Apart from the capital city and home to the government of USA , CIA and Pentagon, Washington is also one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
However, Washington is a classical compact city, the old architecture structure of the buildings and museums are the few open things you’ll notice while in town. Most of the city’s infrastructure is very complicated for a new comer, as you get lost sometimes while driving a car or motor bike.
But, you need not to worry about that. Find the Union Station in the heart of Washington using Google Maps, and you can go to anywhere from that station. Union Station is the largest bus/train station in the world. And outside the Union Station there is a local metro station. You’ll find almost everything there. I took a City Bus Tour from outside that station, the bus “City Sightseeing” is very famous for city tours not only in Washington but also in Los Angeles, New York and many other US cities. The city tour cost me $40.
Remember: in any city of the United States of America, find the metro train system and understand it as soon as possible and then try to always travel using the train system, and buy a weekly metro card if you are staying for a week, that will reduce the travel cost to an amazing low amount. I did this myself after I had a few Taxi Nightmares in San Francisco.
I stayed only for one day in Washington, as my friend in Virginia had to pick me up the next day. The one day stay in a Hostel in DC cost me $60, I used hostel for the first time in my travel history. It was a great experience, and I made a German friend there. The hostel was very clean, quite and safe.
Washington to Virginia
As I completed my DC city tour at 4:00pm, my friend from Virginia came to pick me from my hostel. Washington DC has border with two states i.e Virginia & Maryland. My friend had brought his car in which we traveled to Virginia, it took 1:30 hours to reach Fredericksburg, Virginia. The road from DC to Virginia was one of the fantastic roads I’ve seen so far. On both sides, there was a view like forests and the road is very wide and smooth as well as professionally managed by highway police.
Virginia is a different state, it’s all green and beautiful. Life here in Fredericksburg looks like the life in Village, the State of Virginia is very big, I didn’t see the rest of the state, as I stayed in Fredericksburg city of Virginia for 3 days and 4 nights. I enjoyed the beautiful life there. It was written on the number plate of every vehicle “Virginia is for Lovers”. Despite a very quite environment like a village, still you can find everything you can imagine in different stores such as Walmart, Giant and 7-eleven.
I didn’t spend a single penny here, as my friend hosted me here for 4 nights. However, I did some shopping in the Walmart store, I bought a Blue Yeti Microphone which I needed for recording tutorials. I also purchased a few other electronics here in the Walmart store. I did a shopping of total $200 here in Virginia, the rest all expenses were by my friend with whom I stayed in Virginia.
Virginia to New York
My last destination in the US was New York, I wanted to stay my last 4 days in New York. In the morning of 4 July (As it was USA independence day), I reached the Union Station in Washington DC with my Virginian friend. Since I didn’t find a direct bus in Fredericksburg to New York, therefore I had to go to Washington DC to catch a bus to New York.
I had checked the bus ticket online from DC to New York, that was $35 on the website, but when I reached the station and asked the guy on ticketing counter, he said the ticket will cost you $57, and that was a nightmare. I’ll suggest everyone to buy the ticket online as soon as possible so you can save many bucks.
The bus from DC to New York took 3:30 hours to reach New York, and it was very smooth journey and the bus was of international standard with free WiFi in it. On the way to New York, I saw Maryland and Philadelphia states which were not very different than Washington the district of Colombia and Virginia.
Exploring the New York
New York is called the heart of USA, it’s the business hub and financial center of the United States of America. It’s a multi-dimensional state with so much business and diversity. Since New York itself is a state, and there are many cities within the New York state. I stayed all 4 nights in China Town located in the downtown of New York city.
The reason I stayed in China town was the cheap hotel which cost me $40 per night ($160 for 4 nights). New York is a very expensive place, you can’t find a hotel for less than $150 bucks per day, and I didn’t want to spend that much on the hotel, therefore I decided to find a cheap hotel or hostel, and I found that on Agoda.com. The hotel name was “Sun Bright Hotel” which provided a very small 6 square fit room for $40 per night. But that was enough for a person to sleep and keep luggage safe in day time.
The first day I rested in my room, and explored the China town itself, and found out how to use the Train System, and I came to know that the New York train system is a bit difficult to understand as it’s very large and heavy. However, I just found my way to go to the famous Times Square and come back to China Town (Canal Street).
The very next day, I went to the famous Times Square, and booked a two days city tour via the same “City Sightseeing” bus service, this package also includes a ferry tour from Manhattan to New Jersey city. The first day, I explored all the famous places via city tour bus such as the Times Square, Central Park, Museums and other areas in Uptown. And then the night tour in which I saw the downtown areas. This whole two days package cost me only $54.
The very next day, I took the ferry tour from 12th Avenue in Manhattan near Times Square. And it was again an amazing experience. We all got loaded into the cruise which was a double story beautiful ferry. I took so many pictures and recorded videos during the two hours journey from Manhattan to different locations of New York i.e Broklen, New Jersey, World Trade Center, Liberty island etc. I already had a ferry experience from Phuket to Krabi in Thailand, so I knew, there would be so much adventure. 🙂
Finally, the 15 days USA journey came to an end, and my last night adventure was at the times square again. You can find the fun and awesome moments in the pictures and videos. I’ll be updating this page whenever I have more information related to my US tour.
Summary and Total Expenses
So it’s the end of my US tour, In the first part of this tour, I visited San Francisco, San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Los Angeles which all are part of California state. In this last part, I visited Washington DC, Virginia and New York. I hope you enjoyed this US adventure along the way.
- Previous expenses: $2450 Dollars
- Los Angeles to Washington Flight: $260
- Washington Hostel & Tourism: $150
- Virginia: $0
- New York Hotel, Food & Tourism: $360
- Shopping in Virginia & New York: $300
Grand Total: $3520
Note: As my US tour was a 15 days tour, but I spent four days with my friend in Virginia, so I didn’t spend any money there. Therefore, you can say the above expenses ($3520) for an 11 days tour, and if we exclude $300 for shopping which is everybody’s personal choice then it would be $3220 for 11 days tour. But remember, it can be very less than what I spent according to a well executed plan and money saving formula. Happy Traveling 🙂
